Understanding EHO inspections and HACCP Training.

The FSAI is the national body responsible for food safety in Ireland. It enforces food law, publishes guidance, and works with Environmental Health Officers who inspect food businesses. Many people search for "HACCP FSAI" when looking for food safety training that meets the Irish food safety standard.

The FSAI publishes the Guide to Food Safety Training, which describes the food safety skills food handlers need at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3. Under Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 and S.I. No. 369/2006, every food business must make sure its food handlers are trained to match their work.

Our HACCP Course is aligned with the FSAI Guide to Food Safety Training for Levels 1 and 2, so your certificate is accepted by employers and Environmental Health Officers across Ireland.

What matters to employers and inspectors is that your training reflects current Irish food safety guidance - which our course does. It covers the 7 HACCP principles, food hygiene, temperature control and allergen management.

Do I need a HACCP Course?

The answer depends on your specific situation. For most workers in Ireland, EHO accepted training like our course is exactly what employers require. However, there are some circumstances where a formal QQI award may be necessary or beneficial.

When compliant online training is enough

For the vast majority of workers, our EHO accepted HACCP Training meets all legal and employer requirements. This includes:

  • Storage and distribution staff, including chilled warehouses, couriers and delivery drivers
  • Retail staff, including supermarkets, delis, forecourts and stockrooms
  • Food manufacturing workers, including production lines and packing
  • Facility and canteen managers responsible for shared kitchens
  • Hospitality staff, including hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafes
  • Office teams using a shared kitchen or ordering in food
  • Healthcare support staff, including many care assistant roles

When formal certification may be required

Some specific roles, particularly in healthcare, may require or prefer a QQI Level 5 HACCP award. These include:

  • Nursing staff in certain healthcare settings
  • Catering and food service staff in hospitals
  • Those pursuing healthcare qualifications where HACCP credits are needed
  • Employers who specifically request QQI certification

"For most workplace HACCP requirements, EHO accepted training is sufficient. Check with your employer if you are unsure whether they require a specific QQI award."

What our course covers

Our course is aligned with the FSAI Guide to Food Safety Training for Levels 1 and 2 and covers all the essential food safety topics:

  1. Food safety hazards - Biological, chemical, physical and allergenic hazards and how they make food unsafe
  2. Legal Requirements - Irish food safety law, FSAI guidance and your duties as a food handler
  3. The 7 principles of HACCP - Hazard analysis, critical control points, monitoring, corrective actions and records
  4. Temperature control - Safe cooking, chilling, hot holding and the danger zone (5C to 63C)
  5. Cross-contamination control - Separating raw and ready-to-eat food and colour-coded equipment
  6. Personal hygiene - Hand washing, fitness to work and protective clothing
  7. Allergen management - The 14 named allergens and giving customers accurate information
  8. Cleaning and pest control - Keeping food premises and equipment safe and hygienic

Employer recognition

Our certificates are accepted by employers throughout Ireland because they are aligned with Irish food safety training guidance. The certificate shows that the holder has:

  • Completed comprehensive HACCP Training
  • Passed an assessment demonstrating understanding
  • Received certification from an accredited provider
  • Met their legal food safety training obligation

Each certificate includes a unique verification code that employers can check to confirm authenticity and validity.

Understanding food safety qualifications in Ireland

Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) is the state agency responsible for promoting quality and accountability in education and training services in Ireland. QQI manages the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ), which places qualifications at different levels from 1 to 10. Many people searching for a "QQI HACCP course" are really asking how our certificate fits within this framework.

It is important to understand that while QQI certifies many occupational awards including some healthcare-related HACCP qualifications, the general workplace requirement for HACCP Training is regulated by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA), not FSAI. Our course meets HSA requirements, which is what matters for general workplace compliance.

QQI Level 5 HACCP award

Some training providers offer a specific QQI Level 5 component unit in HACCP. This is a formal educational award that appears on the National Framework of Qualifications. However, this QQI-certified award typically requires classroom attendance, longer duration, and costs significantly more than HSA-compliant online training.

The QQI Level 5 HACCP award may be specifically required for certain healthcare roles where the qualification contributes to a larger QQI Major Award such as Healthcare Support. If your employer specifically requires the QQI certificate (as distinct from EHO accepted training), you should verify their exact requirements.

When compliant online training is enough

For the vast majority of HACCP Training needs in Ireland, EHO accepted training (which our course provides) is exactly what is required. This includes:

  • General workplace HACCP Training requirements
  • Compliance with Irish food hygiene regulations
  • Employment in warehousing, logistics, retail, construction, hospitality, and most other sectors
  • Many healthcare support and care assistant roles
  • Insurance and contractor compliance requirements

Comparing training standards

Understanding the difference between EHO accepted training and QQI certification helps you choose the right option for your needs:

Our EHO accepted online course

  • Meets your food handler training duty under EC Regulation 852/2004
  • Focuses on practical workplace safety knowledge
  • Can be completed online in approximately 45 minutes
  • Instant certification upon passing
  • CPD and RoSPA accredited
  • Affordable at €35
  • Accepted by the vast majority of Irish employers

The QQI Level 5 route

  • Formal educational qualification on the NFQ
  • Typically requires classroom attendance
  • Usually 1-2 days duration
  • May include practical assessment elements
  • Part of the formal qualifications framework
  • Higher cost - typically €150-300
  • Required for some specific healthcare qualifications

For most workers and employers, EHO accepted training represents excellent value and meets all practical requirements. The additional cost and time of QQI certification is only worthwhile if specifically required by your employer or educational pathway.

Making the right choice for your situation

If you are unsure whether you need EHO accepted training or a specific QQI award, we recommend:

  1. Check with your employer - Ask specifically whether they require "QQI certification" or simply "HACCP Training/Certificate"
  2. Review job requirements - Job listings that require QQI certification will specifically state this
  3. Consider your sector, because healthcare roles building towards a QQI Major Award may need QQI component units
  4. Evaluate cost and time - For general workplace compliance, HSA training is more efficient

Our course is the right choice for the vast majority of HACCP Training needs in Ireland. If you discover that your employer specifically requires QQI certification, we can advise on alternative options.

FAQs

EHO inspections and HACCP questions.

Clear answers on training levels, EHO inspections and how our certificate is treated.

Is your HACCP Course a QQI qualification?
No. Our course is EHO accepted food safety training, not a QQI award on the National Framework of Qualifications. For everyday compliance that is exactly what the law asks for: training that matches the food work you do, backed by a certificate an inspector can verify.
What is the FSAI and what does it do?
The FSAI is the national body responsible for food safety in Ireland. It enforces food law, publishes guidance, and works with Environmental Health Officers who inspect food businesses. The FSAI publishes the Guide to Food Safety Training that sets the standard for Levels 1, 2 and 3.
Is this HACCP Course aligned with food handler training levels?
Yes. Our HACCP Course is aligned with the FSAI Guide to Food Safety Training for Levels 1 and 2, covering the food safety knowledge and skills the FSAI expects food handlers to have.
Does the FSAI require food handlers to be trained?
Under Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 and S.I. No. 369/2006, every food business must ensure food handlers are supervised, instructed and trained in food hygiene to match their work. The FSAI sets out the expected training levels and EHOs check for this on inspection.
What are the Irish food safety training levels?
The FSAI describes three levels: Level 1 (induction skills for all staff), Level 2 (additional skills for food handlers), and Level 3 (skills for supervisors and managers). Our course covers Food Safety Level 1 and 2, which applies to most food handlers.
Will an EHO accept this HACCP Certificate?
Yes. Because our course is aligned with the FSAI Guide to Food Safety Training for Levels 1 and 2, your certificate serves as evidence of food safety training that Environmental Health Officers accept on inspection.
